Ans. Evans was a jolly good fellow. Being a Jail bird, he had escaped three times from the jail. He had been star of the Christmas concert. He had a keen desire to acquire some academic qualification and started taking night classes in the prison.

Ans. Assistant Secretary with special responsibility for modern languages asked to speak the Governor. The Assistant Secretary told that there was a correction slip which some fool had forgotten to place in the exam packages.

Ans. At 11: 20 a.m. McLeery informed Evans that exam was over and he should stop writing.

Ans. The Governor finally realised that it was McLeery who had escaped and it was Evans who had stayed back in the guise of McLeery. To locate Evans he took the help of the index No. 313 and the centre No 271 from the correction slip.

18. How did Evans arrange blood for his plan ?

Ans. McLeery had a rubber ring. It had a pig's blood in it and it was kept by invigilator in the suitcase. It had some chemicals and some blood to prevent it from clotting.

Ans. In fact he was not the parson but Evans friend who wore two collors, two gowns and two beards to execute Evans escape plans. He also brought a rubber tube which had pig's blood mixed with human blood to prevent it from clotting.

1. Who was Evans? What did he want? How was he living at the prison and how did the Governor help him to fulfil his aim? 

इवांस कौन था? वह क्या चाहता था? वह कैद में कैसे रह रहा था और गवर्नर ने उसका उद्देश्य पूरा करने में कैसे सहायता की?

Ans Evans wits a young prisoner at the Oxford Prison. The prison officers called him 'Evans the Break as he had escaped from prison three times. He was kleptomaniac but there was no recond of violence indulged in by him. He was actually a pleasant person, but very clever and cunning The Secretary of the Examinations Board received a telephonic request from the Governor of the Oxford Prison to create an examination centre in jail for one candidate named Evans. He started night classes in O-Level German last September. He was the only one in the class. The Governor enquires about the procedure. The Secretary asks him not to worry about it. He will be sending him all the forms and other necessary things. He enquires about Evans. The Governor assures him that there is no record of violence against Evans. It is decided to examine him in his prison cell. One of the parsons from St Mary Mags is arranged to invigilate. The Governor did not tell the Secretary that Evans the Break' had already escaped from prison three times.

2. How did the Governor arrange exam for Evans? What precautions and preparations were done to make the exam successful? Was it successfully organized?

Ans. The prison authorities made requisite arrangement in preparing Evans for the examination. The Governor recommended his case to the examination board and he was allowed to appear for the examination in his cell only under the invigilation of a Parson from St. Mary Mags. All precautions were taken for the smooth conduct of the

examination. The Governor decided to keep a close eye over the whole affair. The examination was conducted in the cell of the prisoner. The door of the cell was locked. The cell was thoroughly searched before the day of examination. Evan's nail file, razor and any other things that could help in his escape was removed from there. The prison officers put a device over the door of the cell so that the Governor could hear all the conversation going during the examination. Even the Prison Officer was asked to peep through the peephole to see that everything was going smoothly. However all this arrangements proved futile and Evans managed to escape from prison. It was not successfully organized.

Ans. Reverend McLeery was a parson. He was appointed by the Examination Board to act as an invigilator for the exam to be conducted in the prison. But in fact the person who came there to invigilate was one of Evans accomplices. The real McLeery had been kept tied in his room. The suitcase that McLeery carried had a yellow invigilation paper, a sealed envelope containing the question paper, a copy of the Bible, the newspaper The Church Times', a paper knife and a small inflated rubber ring. McLeery said that he was suffering from piles and he needed it if he had to sit for some length of time. When Evans' exam was going on, a correction slip was send to him. The correction slip informed Evans the name of the hotel where he was to go. Then it made his friends know the exact time the exam started.

 4. Who were Stephens and Jackson? What duty was assigned to them and how did they fulfil it?

Ans. Jackson was the senior prison officer on Dwing. Stephens was also an officer at the Odord prison. He was recently recruited to the profession. However, they both proved good for nothing and used to jump into conclusion very soon without doing any investigation. Both of the prison officer were given the responsibility for the examination. The invigilator was to be frisked. The precaution for exams were to be followed. There should not be anything which may allow the Evans to escape. On the evening before the exam, Evans' cell was thoroughly searched that he should have something that could help him in he escape. His nail scissors and nail-file were taken away, and the report was submitted by Mr. Jackson that the Evan's cell had been fully sanitised. Moreover Stephen also collected the razor from Evans in the morning in order to avert any possibility to deceives the system of security by him

जैक्सन डी विंग के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी थे। स्टीफन भी ऑक्सफोर्ड जेल में वरिष्ट अधिकारी थे। हाल‌‌ ही में पेशे से सेवानिवृत्ति हुए थे। हालाँकि वह खुद को किसी भी तरह साबित नहीं कर पाए और बिना किसी जांच के बहुत जल्द निष्कर्ष पर पहुँच गए। दोनों ही अधिकारियों को परीक्षा की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई थी। निरीक्षक को जाँचना था। परीक्षा के लिए एहतियात का पालन किया जाना था। वहीं ऐसा कुछ भी होना नहीं चाहिए था जो इवांस की भागने में सहायता करें। पाँच की शाम से पहले इवांस की कोठरी को अच्छे में देखा गया था। उसके पास ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं होना चाहिए जिससे इसे मदद मिले। उससे उसका नाखून काटने वाला और कैंची भी ले ली गई थी। सारी रिपोर्ट मिस्टर जॉनसन को सौंप दी गई कि इवास की कोठरी को अच्छे से देखा जा चुका है। और तो और इवांस से उसका दस्तरा भी सुबह से लिया गया इसके लिए सुरक्षा व्यवस्था को धोखा देने की किसी भी संभावना से बचने के लिए सारे एहतियात बरते जा चुके थे।

 5. What happened after the completion of the exam? Was everything quiet ok or something (mishappened? Explain. 

परीक्षा की समाप्ति के बाद क्या हुआ ? क्या सबकुछ बिल्कुल ठीक रहा अथवा कुछ गलत हुआ था? व्याख्या कीजिए।

Ans. After the exam. Evans had escaped from the jail. This time when he escaped under the guise of McLeery, the Governor again caught him at Golden Lion Hotel. The Governor made him sit in the prison van and said he would see him in the prison, Evans laughed. The Governor did not take notice of it. But in fact, this laughter indicated that he would not reach the prison. This indicated that he was going under a plan and was sure of his freedom. He knew he was going to befool the Governor once again. And so it happened The driver of the prison van and the jail officer accompaying him were his own men. They moved him to freedom despite all the precaution taken by the jail officer, he succeeded in escaping. In fact, the Governor of the oxford Prison was gullied and he could not lay of a foolproof security ring around Mr. Evans, despite knowing the extent of Evan's guile
