1. Who was Mr. Lamb? How did Derry come in his contact?
मि० सैम्ब कौन थे? डेरी उनके सम्पर्क में कैसे आया?
Ans. Mr. Lamb was an old man with a tin leg. His real leg was blown off years ago during the war. He lived in a big house and he had no family. As Derry was walking through Mr. Lamb's garden, he felt the place isolated. So he got into the garden by climbing over the wall. In this way he got into his contact.
मिस्टर लैम्ब टिन की एक टॉंग वाला बूढ़ा व्यक्ति था। उसकी वास्तविक टाँग युद्ध के दौरान उड़ गयी थी। वह एक बड़े घर में रहता था और उसका कोई परिवार नहीं था। जब हैरी मिस्टर लैम्ब के बगीचे के पास से गुजर रहा था तो उसने बगीचे को एकांत में पाया इसलिए वह दीवार फांदकर बगीचे में चला गया। इस प्रकार वह मिस्टर लैम्ब के संपर्क में आया।
2. What did Mr. Lamb say to Derry on his coming into his garden?
मि0 लैम्ब ने हैरी से उसके बगीचे में आगमन पर क्या कहा?
Ans. The attitude of Mr. Lamb towards Derry was quite gentle, protective and accommodating. Like an elder in the family giving advice and instructions to the younger members. Mr. Lamb advices Derry to mind the apples lest he should trip. He also advices Derry not to feel afraid.
मिस्टर लैम्ब का व्यवहार डेरी के प्रति काफी सभ्य था, सुरक्षात्मक और मिलनसार था। परिवार के एक बड़े के समान सलाह देने तथा छोटों को निर्देश देने वाला मिस्टर लैम्ब हैरी को सलाह देते हैं कि वह घूमने के बजाय सेबों पर ध्यान दे और ये भी सलाह दी कि वह भयभीत न हो।
3. How old was Derry? Why people were afraid of him?
हैरी कितने वर्ष का था? लोग उससे क्यों डरते थे?
Ans. Derry is a fourteenyear boy. One side of face is burnt due to acid. People look at his face and call it terrible thing. They call it the ugliest thing they ever saw. So according to Derry people were afraid of him.
डेरी चौदह वर्ष का लड़का है। उसका एक तरफ का चेहरा तेजाब से जला हुआ है। लोग उसके चेहरे को देखकर उसे एक भयानक चीज बताते हैं। वे उसके चेहरे को अब तक की देखी सबसे भद्दी चीज बताते हैं। इस प्रकार से डैरी के अनुसार लोग उससे डरते हैं।
4. How was Derry's face burnt?

Ans. He got acid all down that side of his face and it burnt it all away. And since then it was like that and it would never be any different
उसके चेहरे पर एक तरफ तेजाब गिर गया और उसने उसका पूरा चेहरा जला दिया और तब से वह ऐसा ही था और कभी अलग नहीं होगा।
5. What example did Mr. Lamb give about the growing life?
मिo लैम्ब ने बढ़ते जीवन के बारे में क्या उदाहरण दिया?
Ans. Mr. Lamb gives the example of a flower and a weed. He tells that a weed is also a gre growing plant as is a flower. So, there is no difference between a weed and a flower. A weed is also as a important flower

6. How was Mr. Lamb a disable person? What happened to him?

Ans. Mr. Lamb lost one leg in a war. There is a tin leg in its place. The children would mockingly call him Lamey-Lamb. Also, no one ever comes to see him. People have spread many stories about him
मिस्टर लैंब को एक टाँग युद्ध में चली गई। उसकी जगह पर एक टीन की टाँग है। बच्चे उसे मजाक में लगा लैब बुलाते हैं। उससे कोई मिलने नहीं आता है। लोगों ने उसके विषय में बहुत सी बातें फैला दी।
7. What incident of a woman did Derry tell to Mr. Lamb?
डेरी ने औरत की कौन-सी पटना मि० लैम्ब को बताई ?
Ans. Derry said to Mr. Lamb, "One day, a woman went by me in the street- I was at a bus stop and she was with another woman and she looked at me and said slowly". She said "Look at that, that's terrible thing That's a face only mother could love.

8. What did Mr. Lamb tell about his bees?

Ans. Mr. Lamb wants to say that for those who love music, those bees aing a sweet song aliter they are only murmuring. Through these lines Mr. Lamb wants to say that we should not look at thoughts of the people, we must do our work, people will comment as it is duty of world to comment.

9. What was the fear of man who locked up himself in a room, according to the incident told by Mr. Lamb?
मि0 लैम्ब के द्वारा बताई गई घटना के अनुसार, उस व्यक्ति का क्या भय था जिसने स्वयं को एक कमरे में बन्द कर लिया था?
Ans. There was a man who was afraid of everything is this world. A bus might run him over, or a man might breathe deadly germs into him, or a donkey might kick him to death or lightning might strike him down, or he might love a girl and the girl would leave him, and he might slip on a banana skin. So he went to his room and locked the door and stayed there. A picture fell off the wall onto his head and killed him.
एक व्यक्ति था जो संसार में हर चीज से डरता था। कहीं कोई बस उसके ऊपर न चढ़ जाये या कोई व्यक्ति उसके ऊपर सांस के द्वारा जहरीले कीटाणु न छोड़ दें या कोई गधा उसे लात न मार दे जिससे वह मर जाये या कहीं उस पर बिजली न गिर पड़े या उसे किसी लड़की से प्यार हो जाए और लड़की उसे छोड़ दे और वह किसी केले के छिलके पर से फिसल न जाए। इसलिए वह अपने कमरे में गया और दरवाजा बंद कर लिया और वहीं रहा। एक तस्वीर उसके सिर पर गिरी और वह मर गया।
10. How did Mr.Lamb motivate Derry by giving the example of the organs of Derry's own body?
मिल लैम्ब ने ईरी को डैरी के स्वयं के शरीर के उदाहरण को देकर कैसे प्रेरित किया?
Ans. Mr. Lamb tells Derry that he is like others, has two eyes, two ears, two legs, two arme, brain and a tongue. He can do and achieve whatever he likes. In this way Mr. Lamb tries to remove baseless fears of Derry.
मिस्टर लैम्ब ने डैरी से कहा कि वह दूसरों की तरह है, उसकी दो आँखें, दो कान, दो पैर , दो हाथ , दिमाग तथा एक जीभ है। वह जो चाहे वो कर सकता है तथा पा सकता है। इस प्रकार से मिo लैब देरी का आधार रहित भय हटाना चाहते हैं।
11. How did Kids call Mr. Lamb? What was his reaction?
बच्चे मि0 लैम्ब को कैसे बुलाते थे? उसकी क्या प्रतिक्रिया होती थी ?
Ans. The street kids call Mr. Lamb "Lamey-Lamb" because he had an artificial leg of tin. One of his real leg had been blown off in explosion of bomb. Gradually, he has become used to hearing it. Now, he does not feel bad about it.
गली के बच्चे मि0 लैम्ब को लँगड़ा लैम्ब कहकर बुलाते हैं क्योंकि उसकी एक टांग टीन की थी। उसकी एक टांग बम धमाके में उड़ गयी थी। धीरे-धीरे उसे नकली टांग पहनने की आदत पड़ गयी। अब उसे उसके साथ कोई नहीं परेशानी नहीं थी।
12. What did Derry say to Mr. Lamb while returning from the garden?
हैरी ने मि० लैम्ब से बगीचे से लौटते समय क्या कहा ?
Ans. When Derry was returning to home he said to Mr. Lamb that he will be back in a short time He could run fast because he had not a tin leg. Moreover he wanted to inform his mother about his presence with Mr. Lamb.
जब डेरी घर वापस लौटकर आ रहा था तो उसने लैम्ब से कहा कि वह थोड़ी ही देर में आ जाएगा। वह तेज दौड़ सकता था क्योंकि उसकी टाँग टीन की नहीं थी। इतना ही नहीं वह अपनी माँ को बताना चाहता था कि वह मि० लैंब के साथ था।
13. Why was Derry impressed by Mr. Lamb?
(डैरी, मि0 लैम्ब से क्यों प्रभावित हो गया था.?)
Ans. He has got friends everywhere though kids call him "Lamey-Lamb" He prepares toffee for children. Thus Derry realizes positive and productive attitude of Mr. Lamb towards life. So, he was impressed by Mr. Lamb.
उसके हर तरफ कई दोस्त थे फिर भी बच्चे उसे "लंगड़ा लैम्ब" बुलाते थे। वह बच्चों के लिए टॉफी बनाते थे। इस प्रकार से डरी मि. लैम्ब के जीवन के प्रति धनात्मक एवं उत्पादकतापूर्ण दृष्टिकोण पाता है। इसलिए वह मि० लैंब से प्रभावित था।
14. How did Derry's mother react when she came to know about Derry's returning to Mr. Lamb's garden?
जब हैरी की माँ को हैरी के मि० लैम्ब के बगीचे को लौटने के बारे में पता चला तब डैरी की माँ ने कैसे प्रतिक्रिया दी ?
Ans. Derry's mother did not have any good opinion about Mr. Lamb. She considered him to be a worthless man. She thought that Mr. Lamb's talk was all nonsense. She did not want Derry to go there.
डेरी की माँ का मिo लैब के प्रति कोई अच्छा विचार नहीं था वो उसे बेकार आदमी समझती थी वो समझनी थी कि, मि. लैम्ब की बातें बेकार हैं। वो नहीं चाहती थी कि डेरी यहाँ जाएं।
15. What did Derry find when he reached to Mr. Lamb's garden?
डेरी जब मिo लैम्ब के बगीचे में पहुँचा तो उसने वहाँ क्या पाया (देखा)?
Ans. When Derry reached Mr. Lamb's garden he saw Mr. Lamb with crab apples. He was surprised to find Mr. Lamb lying dead on the ground.
जब डेरी मिo लैम्ब के बगीचे पहुंचा तो उसने मि0 लैम्ब को सेवों के साथ पाया उसे मि० लैम्ब को जमीन पर मरा पड़ा देखकर आश्चर्य हुआ।

Answer the following questions in not more than 150 words each :
1. Who was Derry? What was his problem? What behaviour had he to face from others? What had his thinking been?
डैरी कौन था? उसकी क्या समस्या थी? उसे दूसरों से कैसे व्यवहार का सामना करना पड़ता था? उसकी सोच क्या बन गई थी ?
Ans. Derry was a boy of fourteen years old, who is withdrawn and defiant because of burns and scars one side of his face. Derry carries a conviction that people do not feel comfortable while looking at his face. He thinks people avoid him. He thinks that no body likes his company or loves him. He feel that people do not accept him as a part of the society. He suffers from inferiority complex due to his burnt face. People constantly reminded him his ugliness and so he stayed away from them. He felt he was too ugly to be liked and loved by anyone so he became recluse. People said that it was not important what he looked like Derry knew that people lied and showed sympathy only to comfort and that he would not change and would continue to look like monstrous beast.
डेरी एक 14 वर्षीय लड़का था। जो अपने जले हुए निशानों के कारण गुमसुम और विद्रोही स्वभाव का है। डैरी के मन में द्वेष है कि लोग उसके जले हुए चेहरे के हिस्से को देखकर सहज महसूस नहीं करेंगे। वह सोचता है कि लोग उससे बचते हैं। उसे लगता है कि कोई भी उसकी संगति पसंद नहीं करता है और ना ही उसे प्यार करता है। वह सोचता है कि लोग उसे समाज के एक हिस्से के रूप में स्वीकार नहीं करते हैं। वह अपने जले हुए चेहरे के कारण हीन भावना से पीड़ित है। लोगों ने उसे लगातार उनकी कुरूपता की याद दिलाई और इसलिए वह उनसे दूर रहता है। उसे लगा कि वह इतना बदसूरत है कि उसे कोई पसंद और प्यार नहीं कर सकता। लोगों ने कहा कि यह महत्त्वपूर्ण नहीं था कि वह कैसा दिखत था। डैरी जानता था कि लोग झूठ बोलते हैं और सहानुभूति दिखाते हैं केवल उसे दिलासा देने के लिए कि वह नहीं बदलेगा और राक्षसी जानवर की तरह दिखता रहेगा।

Ans. Mr. Lamb was an old man who lived alone in his house. No one comes to him to see Mr. Lamb is retired from the Army. He has lost one of his leg in war. He has a garden. Kids call him Lamey-Lamb. People have spread stories about him. He has a tin leg. Mr. Lamb tella Derry that he, like others, has two eyes, two ears, two legs, two arms, brain and a tongue He can do or achieve whatever he likes. In this way Mr. Lamb tries to remove baseless fears of Derry. He also tries to overcome his feeling of loneliness by watching, listening and thinking. He had no curtains on windows because he loves natural light. He finds no difference between flowers, trees, herbs and weeds. It is by such thoughts that he tries to explain Derry.

3. List the examples given by Mr. Lamb to motivate Derry and how did those make effect on Derry?
मिo लैम्ब द्वारा बैरी को प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए दिए गए उदाहरणों की सूची बनाइए और उनका डेरी पर कैसे प्रभाव पड़ा?
Ans. Derry was given some examples by Mr. Lamb. Mr. Lamb has lost one of his leg in a war. He tells Derry he is not handicapped like him. He has two legs, two eyes, two ears, two hands. He can do anything in life. He also advises him to have optimistic approach in life. Then he starts explaining Derry about his own approach towards life. He says everything interests him that is created by God. He says that people say bees buzz but according to him they hum. According to Lamb, everything which grows has life in it. For him even weeds are important. He tells Derry that its not what he looks like, its what he is inside. This makes Derry understand that beauty is only skin deep. He understands that he not inferior to anybody. He can do whatever he likes.
डैरी को मिस्टर लम्ब द्वारा कुछ उदाहरण दिए गए थे। मिस्टर लैम्ब ने एक युद्ध में अपनी एक टांग खो दी है। वह डैरी से कहता है कि वह अपनी (मिस्टर लैम्ब) की तरह विकलांग नहीं है। उसकी दो आँखें, दो पैर आदि हैं। वह अपने जीवन में कुछ भी कर सकता है। वह उसे जीवन में आशावादी दृष्टिकोण रखने की सलाह देने का प्रयास करता है। फिर वह देरी को जीवन के प्रति अपने दृष्टिकोण के बारे में समझाना शुरू कर देता है। वह कहता है कि भगवान द्वारा बनाई गई हर चीज में उसकी दिलचस्पी है। वह कहता है कि लोग मधुमक्खियों को भिनभिनाना लगता है लेकिन उसके अनुसार वे गुनगुनाते हैं। मिस्टर लैम्ब के अनुसार जो कुछ भी बढ़ता है उसमें जीवन होता है। उसके लिए जंगली घास भी महत्त्वपूर्ण है। वह डैरी से कहता है कि यह जरूरी नहीं है कि जो वह दिखता है. यह जरूरी है जो वह अंदर है। इससे ईरी समझ जाता है कि सुंदरता केवल त्वचा की गहराई है। वह जो भी चाहे कर सकता है।
4. Why did Derry's mother stop him to go to Mr. Lamb? What was her experience about the world?
डेरी की माँ ने उसको मिo लैम्ब के पास जाने से क्यों रोका? उसका दुनिया को लेकर क्या अनुभव था?
Ans. Derry's mother has been in a particular frame of mind about the old man, Mr. Lamb on the basis of his hearsay. She does not have a good opinion of Mr. Lamb and hence doubts the intent of Mr. Lamb. She further thinks that Derry's charred face will make Mr. Lamb more troublesome and insulting and as such, advices her son to remain indoor and do all the thinking he wishes. His mother is quite skeptical of Mr. Lamb. She considers him to be an eccentric. She claims that she heard many things about Mr. Lamb. Infact she has been warned. Though they have lived there for three months, she knows what is worth knowing and Derry is not going back there.
डेरी की माँ को मिस्टर लैम्ब के बारे में संदेह है उसके पास मिस्टर लैम्ब के लिए कोई अच्छी राय भी नहीं है इसलिए वह मिस्टर लैम्ब का हैरी के प्रति क्या इरादा है वह भी नहीं जानती है। वह सोचती है कि डैरी का झुलसा हुआ चेहरा मिस्टर लैम्ब को परेशान बना देगा और इस तरह, वह अपने बेटे को घर के अंदर रहने और अपनी इच्छानुसार सब कुछ सोचने की सलाह देती है। उसकी माँ को मिस्टर लैम्ब पर काफी शक है। वह उसे सनकी मानती है। वह दावा करती है कि उसने मिस्टर लैब के बारे में बहुत सी बातें सुनी। वास्तव में उसे चेतावनी दी गई है। हालाँकि वे वहाँ तीन महीने तक रहे। यह जानती है कि क्या जानने लायक है और डेरी वहाँ वापस नहीं जाएगा।
3. Give a character sketch of Mr. Lamb.

Ans. Mr. Lamb is an important character in the lesson "On The Face of It". He has a tin leg. He lived alone and kept the door of his garden always open. He knew the art of living. He was a man with positive attitude. He brought a major change in Derry's attitude towards life as he was full of negativity due to scar on his face. Mr. Lamb told him to meet people happily and learn to be happy with himself. Mr. Lamb was lonely person. He used to get happiness by spending time with others and reading books.

6. Give a character sketch of Derry.

Ans. Derry is a 14 years old young boy whose face is half burnt because of acid spill on it. His ugly look made him a pessimist and a loner with various negative complexes. Derry was always introverted, frustrated, angry and withdrawn. Moreover, he always had a low confidence and dwelled in self pity apart from always being suspicious about other's intentions towards him.
डेरी 14 वर्ष का युवा लड़का था जिसका आधा चेहरा तेजाव गिरने के कारण जल गया। उसके कुरूप रूप के कारण वह निराशावादी बन गया और ऐसा व्यक्ति जो बहुत-सी नकारात्मकता से भरा है। देरी सदैव से ही अन्तर्मुखी परेशान, को और अलग महसूस करता है। इतना ही नहीं यह आत्मविश्वास से कमजोर था और स्वयं के दुःख में हुआ हुआ रहता है, और दूसरे की सोच को लेकर सन्देह में रहता है।
