Explain with reference to the context the following passages: 

1. Sophie watched...........brother Geoff.

Reference to the Context: This para has been taken from the chapter 'Going Places' written by 'A.R. Barton' This para tells the internal condition and the activities of the family members of Sophie

Explanation: Sophie reached her home and observed her mother working and downing over the sink and that day thought deeply and amazed at the mismatch of the soft bounding fastening the mother's apron (dressings) strings. A good soft looking knot and her mother's back, bent back. The evening time through the dull setting sunlight, through the darkness started for the night could be seen from the windows and the small room got filled with the smoke created by the stone, looking systematic as the heavy-breathing man, the father of Sophie was sitting there in the room in his vest (undergarments) at the table and as there was the only room for living and scullery, a pile of dirty washing vessels was piled up, collected, in the corner of the room. Sophie felt suffocation, unable to breathe the properly and got out to change, to meet her brother Geoff.

2. The table lamp........strings of girls.

Reference to the Context: This part has been taken from the chapter Going Places written by A R. Barton. This part shows the scenic room of Geoff and the communication of Sophie and Geoff.

Explanation: In the room of Geoff, there seemed an amber glow, yellow-orange reflection over the walls, his bedroom walls and that was because of the light casted by the table lamp and there was a large poster of united's first team squad (football team) and under it, there were the coloured photographs of the players in a line and out of those three photographs, there was one who was a young prodigy of Ireland-Casey, Danny Casey. Sophie asked Geoff to promise to not to tell anyone whatever Sophie had told to him. Geoff answered that there was nothing to tell in that. Sophie was scared from her father and asked Geoff for a promise otherwise she expected that her father would kill her Geoff expected that father would not believe on that information. Sophie again requested Geoff. Then Geoff got angry and taking God's name advised that she was very young and a school going girl and Casey must have a lot of girls around him.

3. After dark she.......... he would approve.

Reference to the Context: This paragraph has been taken from the lesson 'Going Places written by AR Barton This paragraph tells about the location of the lonely place where lovers used to meet.

Explanation: Sophie when decided to meet Danny Casey, she, in the evening walked by the canal, that path was glowed, covered, lighted by the glare of the lamps from the wharf, footpath, mini cemented shore and there was only that light. There was very peace, no sound of city's continuous vokes. The place was far from the city and the sound was lowest. She memorized that she used to play there in her childhood days. At that place, there was a wooden bench fixed under a lonely (only) elm tree (a wild tree) and at that place, lovers sometimes came to meet. Sophie sat there and started to wait for Danny Casey. The place was best for meeting and Sophie had always thought such kind of separate meeting there. It was a perfect place for those persons who wanted to remain hidden from others' eyes, who wished not be observed by anybody. And Sophie was confident that Danny would praise for the selection of the place.

4. His eyes are on........... a slightly, breathless.

Reference to the Context: This prose extract has been taken from the story 'Going Places' written by A. R. Barton'. In this extract, Sophie seems to praise and describe Danny.

Explanation: Sophie met Danny Casey, though in her imaginations, and described Danny to her brother Geoff. She explained that the eyes of Danny Casey were exactly same as him. The nose of Danny was seemed spotted and the shape was upward little bit, it seemed turning upward and at his smile was mixed with frightness and nervousness, his teeth had some gaps, space in between. The colour of his eyes was green. Sophie further described that when Danny looked straight at anybody, his eyes seemed to shimmer, sparkle. His eyes seemed gentle, humane, merciful; nearby scared. His eyes looked like a gazelle, an antelope. At that, you (anybody in front) started looking away, here or there. In that case, the person, viewer returned back to find his eyes, the connection, again, a bit out of breath.

5. And she saw...........exultant approbation.

Reference to the Context: This para has been taken from the lesson Going Places' written by A. R. Barton: This para ends the story and tells about the memorable goal done by Danny Casey.

Explanation: Sophie and her family members used to go to see the football match every Saturday, weekly and it was just as the pilgrimage for them. Finally, last Saturday, she again went to see the match. She was watching only Danny Casey. Danny cheated the defenders, the guards doing the safety of goal but made them confused and cheated like ghost. And exactly at that time, fifty thousand spectators got silent, caught their breath, stopped, when Danny fielded the ball exactly, and what next happened was unexpected. Danny, very cleverly struck the ball into the goal and those fifty thousand viewers sounded combindly in a explosion, and surely it was an unexpected, memorable, immediate roaring blast of cheering voices and sounds of delightful encouragement, acceptance of the act.

1. Who was Sophie ? What were her dreams?

Ans. Sophie was a young school going girl belonging to a lower middle-class family. Her dreams were to become a fashion designer, an actress, a manager or to buy a boutique. 

सोफी एक निम्न मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार से संबंध रखने वाली नौजवान स्कूल जाने वाली लड़की थी उसके सपने एक फैशन डिजायनर बन जाने, एक अभिनेत्री, एक मैनेजर अथवा एक बुटीक (वस्वालय) खरीदने के थे।

Ans. At home, Sophie found her father scooping shepherd's pie into his mouth as hard as he could go, his plump face still grimy and sweat-marked from the day.

Ans. Sophie felt tightening in her throat because they lived in a small room including kitchen in itself. The room was steamy from the stove and cluttered with the heavy-breathing man in his vest at the table and the dirty washing piled up in the corner. So, there was she suffocation in the room.

Ans Sophie's brother used to go far places for his work. Sophie wanted that her brother might take her too one day those unknown places. She wanted her brother's more affections because he used to speak very little, voluntarily. She also wanted to meet various persons through her brother Geoff

Ans Sophie's father was a down-to-earth, daily earner person. He knew that her daughter was a daydreamer. She used to tell wild imaginative stories and never faced the realities. So, Sophie's father took Sophie very lightly and ignored her mostly whenever she spoke.

7. What did Sophie tell her brother secretly?

Ans. Sophie told her brother Geoff secretly that she had met Danny Casey in the arcade. She told that she was looking at the clothes in Royce's window when someone had came and stood beside her, she looked around and found that it was Danny Casey.

Ans. Danny Casey was a young Irish genius, a football player. He was the youngest member of his team. Sophie belonged to him through her imaginations. She imagined that Danny Casey met her in the arcade and ready to date with her.

Ans. Sophie didn't want her father to know about Danny Casey because she knew that her father was too rude to her, remained angry with her and never believed her. She knew that her father would react very aggressively knowing about her meeting with Danny Casey because he would understand it as another wild story of her.

Ans. Sophie asked Danny Casey to give her an autograph for little Derek but neither of them had any paper or a pen. She met him in the arcade at Royce's window.

Ans Danny Casey was tall man with a strong dark face. He was handsome. He had green eyes. He had the same accent which was seen often on television at interviews.

Ans. The weekly pilgrimage was to watch United. On Saturday, there organised the matches of football between United and others and the whole family of Sophie used to go there to watch those. There Casey drove in the second goal and beat the hasitant goalkeeper from a dozen yards.

 Ans. After the dark Sophie walked by the canal, along a sheltered path lighted only by the glare of the lamps from the wharf across the water, and the unceasing drone of the city was muffled and distant. She went that lonely place to date with Danny Casey.

15. What happened at the meeting place?

Ans. At the meeting place, she sat down to wait. For some while, waiting, she imagined his coming. She watched along the canal, seeing him come out of the shadows, imagining her own consequent excitement. Not until some time had elapsed did she begin balancing against this the idea of his not coming. 

मुलाकात स्थल पर, वह प्रतीक्षा के लिए बैठ गई। कुछ समय तक इन्तजार करते हुए उसने (सोफी ने) उसके आने की कल्पना की। वह किनारे देखती रही, उसे परछाइयों से निकलकर आता हुआ देखने के परिणामस्वरूप अपनी स्वयं की लगातार होने वाली उत्तेजनाओं की कल्पना कर रही थी। जब कुछ समय गुजर गया तो वह उसके न आने के विचार के बारे में सन्तुलन करने लगी।

16. Why 'resignation was no sudden thing' for Sophie ?

Ans. Resignation was no sudden thing for Sophie because she thought a lot about Danny Casey and according to Sophie's own planning, she went to the meeting place, waited there a long, imagined Danny's coming, balanced her positive and negative thoughts, wished his coming found no sign of him and finally concluded that he would not come, only then the resignation (surrendering her thoughts) occured.

सफी के लिए सम्पूर्ण आत्म समर्पण (विचारों का त्याग) यकायक नहीं था क्योंकि उसने डेनी केसी के बारे में बहुत सोचा और सोफी की स्वयं की योजना के ही अनुसार, वह मिलने वाले स्थान पर पहुंची, वहाँ लम्बे समय तक प्रतीक्षा की, देनी के आने की कल्पना की, अपने सकारात्मक व नकारात्मक विचारों को सन्तुलित किया, उसके आने की इच्छा रखी, इसका कोई भी चिन्न नहीं पाया और अंततः निष्कर्ष निकाला कि वह नहीं आएगा, केवल उसी समय समर्पण ( उसके विचारों का त्याग) प्रकट हुआ।

17. Why was Sophie disappointed? How did she retum? 

(सोफी क्यों उदास थी? वह कैसे लौटी ?)

Ans. Sophie was disappointed because her expectation to meet Danny Casey was not fulfilled. She waited a lot, hoped but Danny didn't come. She returned from there very dejectedly, having heavy thoughts into her mind, slowly walking towards home thinking about the future.

सोफी निराश (दुःखी) हो गई थी क्योंकि डेनी केसी से मिलने की उसकी अपेक्षा पूरी नहीं हुई थी। उसने बहुत प्रतीक्षा की, उम्मीद की परन्तु देनी नहीं पहुँचा। वह वहाँ से बहुत ही निराशा (हताशा) के साथ लौटी, अपने दिमाग में भारी (दुःखमय) विचारों को रखते हुए धीरे घर की तरफ भविष्य के बारे में सोचते हुए बढ़ी।

18. How did Sophie describe Danny Casey? 

(सोफी ने डेनी का वर्णन कैसे किया ?)

 Ans. Sophie described Danny Casey saying that his eyes are on the same level as your own. His nose is freckled and turns upwards slightly, and when he smiles he does so shyly, exposing teeth with gaps between. His eyes are green, and when he looks straight at you they seem to shimmer. They seem gentle, almost afraid. Like a gazelle's.

19. What happened at the stadium last Saturday? 

(पिछले शनिवार को स्टेडियम में क्या हुआ था?) 

Ans. Last Saturday, Sophie saw it all again. She saw him ghost past the lumbering defenders, heard the fifty thousand catch their breath as he hovered momentarily over the ball, and then the explosion of sound as he struck it crisply into the goal, the sudden thunderous eruption of exultant approbation.

Ans. Sophie was a daydreamer girl belonged to a very poor lower middle-class family but her dreams were too higher than the realities. She dreamt of meeting Danny Casey a football player of Ireland team. She imagined even the date with Danny Casey and went to meet him at one place also but in actual, she never met with Danny Casey, neither in the arcade nor any where else.

1. Who were Sophie and Jansie? How did they belong and how were their financial condition?

सोनी और जेन्सी कौन थीं? वे कैसे सम्बन्ध रखती थीं और उनकी आर्थिक स्थिति कैसी थी ? 

Ans. Sophie and Jansie were friends of each other. They belonged to each other as they both were classmates. Both used to go to school together and returned together. Both belonged very poor lower middle-class families. The financial condition of their families was very miserable. Both were earmarked to work in a biscuit factory after school. But there was one dissimilarity between them also. Jansie was a realistic and down-to-earth girl whereas Sophie was a daydreamer and always floated in false imaginings. But as they both were childhood friends, Jansie always tried to bring Sophie to the reality, the right path.

सोफी और जैन्सी एक-दूसरे की महेलियों थीं। वे एक-दूसरे से जुड़ी हुई थीं क्योंकि वे दोनों सहपादिनी थीं। दोनों एक साथ स्कूल जाया करती थीं और साथ ही लौटा करती थी। दोनों बहुत ही गरीब निम्न मध्यमवर्गीय परिवारों से सम्बन्ध रखती थी। उसके परिवारों की आर्थिक स्थिति बहुत दयनीय थी। दोनों ही स्कूल के बाद बिस्कुट के कारखाने में कार्य करने के लिए निर्धारित थी। परन्तु उनके बीच एक असमानता भी थी। जैन्सी वास्तविक (सच के साथ जीने वाली) और जमीन से जुड़ी हुई लड़की वी जबकि सोफी एक दिन में सपने देखने वाली और सदैव झूठी कल्पनाओं में विचरण करने वाली थी। परन्तु जैसा कि वे दोनों बचपन की सहेलियाँ थी, जैन्सी ने हमेशा सोफी को वास्तविकता (धरातल) और सही रास्ते पर लाने की कोशिश की।

2. What were Sophie's dreams? What was the irony in Sophie's life? 

सोफी के सपने क्या थे? सोफी के जीवन में क्या व्यंग (विरोधाभास) वा?

Ans. Sophie was a girl related to a lower middle-class family but opposite to it, she didn't accept the reality. Even, more than it, she started to see the dreams much higher than she must She wanted to achieve everything without any efforts, just by imagining. She thought of become an actress, a manager, fashion designer or to open/buy a boutique. But the irony in Sophie's life is very clear. She dreamt of achieving so many positions but never analysed/ considered her and family's actual financial status. She was a day dreamer and very far from the realities and her dreams were too high in comparison of their economic conditions. 

सोफी एक निम्न मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार से संबंध रखने वाली लड़की भी परन्तु इसके विपरीत, वह वास्तविकता को स्वीकार नहीं करती थी। यहाँ तक कि, इससे भी अधिक, उसने, जो उसे देखने चाहिए थे उससे कहीं बड़े सपने देखना प्रारम्भ कर दिया। वह बिना किन्हीं प्रयासों के हर चीज प्राप्त करना चाहती थी, केवल कल्पनाएँ करके उसने एक अभिनेत्री, एक 1 मैनेजर, फैशन डिजायनर बनने का सोचा अथवा एक बुटीक (वस्त्रालय) खोलने/खरीदने का सोचा। परन्तु सोफी के जीवन में विरोधाभास बड़ा ही स्पष्ट है। वह इतनी सारी स्थितियाँ (स्थान, पद) प्राप्त करने के सपने देखती थी परन्तु कभी भी अपनी और परिवार की वास्तविक आर्थिक स्थिति का विश्लेषण/ एहसास नहीं किया। वह एक दिवास्वप्नदृष्टा थी और वास्तविकताओं से बहुत दूर थी और उनके आर्थिक हालातों की तुलना में उसके सपने कहीं ऊँचे थे। 

3. Give character sketch of 'Geoff'.

Ans. Character Sketch of Geoff

Geoff was Sophie's brother. His character traits are as following:

(i) Geoff was a reserved nature young boy elder than Sophie.

(ii) Geoff had left school three years before and presently, an apprentice mechanic.

(iii) Geoff used to go far side of the city for work

(iv) His life style and life was not open to all

(v) Geoff knew the realities so he had admitted those and started to live practical life by learning motor mechanism.

4. What were the reactions of Geoff and Sophie's father when they came to know about Danny Casey?

When Geoff and Sophie's father came to know about Danny Casey, they reacted in the expected usual way. Geoff, first, didn't believe but later enquired Sophie about the time and place of meeting her with Danny Casey and also asked about the reach of that information of Dad (their father). Sophie's father reacted as it was expected because he knew about her daughter's wild dreamings. He turned his head on his thick neck to look Sophie when Geoff told him about her meeting with Danny Casey. His expression was one of distain. Father muttered something inaudible and dragged himself round in his chair and commented on her another wild story. He further said that one of those days she was going to take herself into a load of trouble. He was aggressive finally

5. How did Sophie meet Danny Casey and how did she describe about him?

Sophie was in the arcade once and seeing the clothes at Royce's window (a shop for fashionable clothings) and the mean while she looked around and found that someone was standing beside her and then she met that person who was Danny Casey, Sophie described him as she observed his whole personality in a short meeting. She said that he had green eyes, gentle eyes. He was not so tall as Geoff would think. Sophie didn't say about his teeth..

In this way, Sophie described Danny Casey to her brother Geoff but Geoff knew that whole story was false, imaginative. And, in actual, really, Sophie never met Danny Casey. She was a daydreamer and had imagined that all as per her.

6. What had happened at the meeting place? Did Sophie meet Danny Casey? Why or why not?

After imagining a lot about Danny Casey, Sophie planned to meet Danny Casey and for that purpose, she selected a lonely place, far from the city, to date Danny Casey. It was that place where sometimes in her childhood, she used to go to play. She reached there, sat on a wooden bench under a solitary elm (tree). She started waiting Danny Casey. For some time, waiting, she imagined his coming. She watched along the canal, seeing him come out of the shadows, imagining her own consequent excitement. Not until some time had elapsed did she begin balancing against this the idea of his not coming. She started to think a lot, talk to herself own and became sad and finally returned to home without meeting Danny Casey. She didn't meet Danny Casey because that all was her imagination and Danny was never about to come there.

7. What thoughts were floating in the mind of Sophie while returning to home from the meeting place? What did she feel/experience on the way? 

मिलने के स्थान से घर लौटते समय सोफी के दिमाग में क्या विचार तैर (धूम) रहे थे? उसने रास्ते में क्या महसूस अनुभव किया?

Ans.

While returning to home, Sophie was having a lot of thoughts into her mind. She thought that how would she live with that burden that Danny had not come to meet her. Her family members would doubt her, as they always doubted her but she would have to hold up her head remembering how that was. Geoff would fly out and slam the door when he would come to know that she had not met Danny Casey. That was a hard thing, that sadness. Then, on the way, Sophie again imagined Danny Casey in front of her and started to talk.

Thus, till returning home, Sophie continuously thought about Danny Casey, and couldn't recover herself.
