Explanation: In the Gemini Studios, there was an important department called as make-up department. In that department, there followed a strict (disciplined) hierarchy (sequence) in the members of the department. The chief (senior most) make-up man used to make-up chief actors and actresses, actually they were made ugly by excess of make-up. The senior assistant of the chief make- up man made second heros and heroines and the junior assistant used to finalize main comedian and the series went on further in the same way. Except these, there were many other supporting actors and actresses in the access who were painted by the office boy. Its ridiculous that the make-up department of the Gemini Studios was also having an office boy. There was the days when crowd shooting was conducted, at that time, that office boy could be seen mixing the paint, the pancake in a big vessel and painting rapidly on the faces of crowd players, crowd actors and actresses

Reference to the Context: The above given para has been taken from the chapter Poets and Pancakes written by 'Asokamitran'. The para gives an instance in regard of Subbu.
Explanation: The author gives the example of the rat who fights with figures underwater and kills her but leakes and takes pity (mercy) on the cubs (babies) of the tigress and cares them lovingly like the mother. Author is confused to act the same thing in the Gemini Studios. Author praises, in other sense criticises Subbu that if the producer would demand the same. Explanation: In the Gemini Studios, there came an extremely talented actress whose temperament was high than average, she once became furious on the set (shooting). Everybody was amazed and there, a lawyer of story department, switched on the recording without her notice and permission. The actress undoubtedly spoke something absurd in anger but nothing noticeable and serious about the producer but when she heard the recording, she was stuck dumb, shocked and speechless. She was a girl from village area and didn't have so much experience of the practical world which needed a gentleness and value to be considered and she found herself trapped in such strange situation. And that was the last day of her native and natural character and after it, she never recovered from that heartily-frozen terror. And unfortunately, she was never seen again acting and her brilliant acting career was briefed and ended that day.

Reference to the Context: This para has been extracted from the chapter Poets and Pancakes by "Asokamitran'. The para introduces a troop named 'Moral Re-Armament Army' of 'Frank Buchman.
Explanation: In the Gemini Studios, once there came a troop named Moral Re-Armament Army leaded by Frank Buchman. It was a group of about two hundred skilled artists. That army visited Madras in 1952 and probably they were welcomed in the best manner at Gemini Studios in all over the country. That group was also called as international circus but ironically they were not skilled on the trapeze (the presentation of swinging and jumping at the circus generally) and if talk about the animals (which were usually found in the circus), they came in contact (with animals) at the dinner table only. But nevertheless, they performed two plays in a most professional manner at the stage of Gemini Studios which left everlasting impact on the audience.
5. At last, around...........in utter bafflement.
Reference to the Context: This part of prose has been taken from the chapter Poets and Pancakes; written by 'Asokamitran'. This part talks about the arrival of an English poet and his lecture.
Explanation: After a long-running news, at last, finally, at four in the afternoon, the poet who was an editor also, arrived at the Gemini Studios. He was a fluent English speaking tall man, a serious one in character and stranger to everybody. Facing the heavy air and sound of six pedestal (standing) fans on the stage, the boss Mr. Vasan spoke. The guest was unknown to the boss also. Boss delivered the speech related to the terms freedom and democracy. Then after him, the poet's tum came. The audience was dazed, astonished and silent, speechless and the poet couldn't have addressed them, such a shocking crowd. That crowd (listeners) was unaware and unknown about the foreign language English and therefore they couldn't understand. His accent (way of speaking) was also an obstacle. After an hour, the poet stopped and the whole spectators moved away in bafflement, amazement.
6. And years later...........disillusioned return.
Reference to the Context: This part of prose has been taken from the chapter Poets and Pancakes' written by Asokamitran. This part tells about the later life of the author and his everlasting affection towards the books.
Explanation: After leaving Gemini Studios, the author was free from work. He was having enough time but not so much money so the cheap things were his attraction. In front of Madras Mount Road Post Office, on the footpath, there he noticed the brand new books in the bunch for sale at the rate of 50 paisa each. They were the copies of the same book, an elegant (special) paperback of American origin. They were special low-priced student edition books, sold at the occasion of 50 anniversary of Russian Revolution. Author purchased a copy of that book The God That Failed. That book contained six essays by six renowned essayists describing separately their journeys into communism and their disillusioned return. Their honest and logical return into communism by their own.

He himself was an actor and a poet also so he used to guide others also in their works. He always had work for everybody. His sense of loyality made him close to the boss. He had a genuine love for anyone he came across and his house was a permanent residence for dozens of near and for relations and acquaintances. He was a charitable and improvident man and used to feed and support everybody. His above mentioned and many other qualities made him closed to the boss and lovable of many others and thus he achieved his deserving position in the Gemini Studios.
कोथामंगलम सुब्बू जैमिनी स्टूडियोज के बॉस (मालिक) का दायाँ हाथ था। जैमिनी स्टूडियोज में उसका स्थान नं० 2 पर था। उसने यह स्थान अपने कठिन परिश्रम और अपने व्यवहार से प्राप्त किया था। उसके अन्दर बहुतेक विशेषताएँ थी जैसे कि वह किसी भी स्थिति को सम्भालने के लिए सदैव तैयार रहता था, प्रत्येक समस्या को हल कर देता था फिर चाहे वह पेशेवर हो अथवा व्यक्तिगत बॉस की अनुपस्थिति में, वह सभी चीजों (कार्यों) को सम्भाल लिया करता था। कभी-कभी, वह बॉस को भी सलाह देता था जब बॉस किसी समस्या में फँस जाते थे। वह स्वयं एक अभिनेता व एक कवि था अतः वह दूसरों का भी उनके कार्यों में मार्गदर्शन किया करता था। उसके पास प्रत्येक के लिए कोई न कोई कार्य रहता था। उसके बफादारी के गुण (खासीयत) ने उसे बॉस के नजदीक ला दिया था। हर मिलने वालों के प्रति उसमें सच्चा प्यार वा और उसका घर पास और दूर के दर्जनों रिश्तेदारों और परिचितों का स्थाई निवास था। वह एक दानी व फिजूलखर्ची वाला आदमी था और दूसरों को खिलाता व सहारा दिया करता था।
उसके ऊपर दर्शाए गए और दूसरे अनेकों गुणों ने उसे बॉस का खास व्यक्तियों और अनेकों का प्यारा बना दिया था। इस प्रकार उसने जैमिनी स्टूडियोज में अपना काबिल (योग्य) स्थान प्राप्त किया था।

Ans. Kothamangalam Subbu was undoubtedly a versatile personality sitting at No. 2 in Gemini Studios. Some of his qualities are following as below:
(i) He had the solution for every problem. (ii) He had work for every employee always.
(iii) He used to advise the boss even in his problems.
(iv) He was a good manager who managed everything in the absence of the boss .
(v) He himself was a good actor and a poet.
(vi) He was a charitable and not a miser.
(vii) He used to help everybody by giving shelter, food and money.
(viii) He was very loyal to his profession and the boss.
(ix) He was tailor-made for films
(x) In total, he was a true human being
कोथामंगलम सम्बू निःसंदेह ही एक बहुमुखी प्रतिभा का धनी जैमिनी स्टूडियोज में न0 2 पर बैठा व्यक्तित्व था। उसके कुछेक गुण निम्नलिखित हैं
(I) उसके पास हर समस्या का समाधान वा
(ii) उसके पास हर कर्मचारी (नौकरी करने वाले) के लिए सदैव कार्य होता था।
(iii) वह बाँस तक को भी उनकी समस्याओं में सलाह देता था।
(iv) वह एक अच्छा प्रबंधक था जो बॉस की अनुपस्थिति में सबकुछ संभालता था।
(v) वह स्वयं एक बेहतरीन कलाकार व कवि था।
(vi) वह कंजूस नहीं दानी था।
(vii) वह सभी की शरण, भोजन व धन देकर सहायता किया करता था।

5. What was Moral Re-Armament Army? Why did it come to Gemini Studios and what were its effect on the local actors?
मॉरल रि-अममेन्ट आर्मी क्या थी? वह जैमिनी स्टूडियोज क्यों पहुंची और क्षेत्रीय (यहाँ के) कलाकारों पर उसके क्या प्रभाव पड़े?
Ans. Moral Re-Armament Army was a troop with almost two hundred strong skilled artists, leaded by Frank Buchman. That army (group) reached Madras in 1952. At Gemini Studios, it visited to give some presentations of the plays, which were prepared by them in a most professional manner. That troop was invited by Gemini Studios and welcomed very warmly. They presented two plays Jotham Valley and The Forgotten Factor' which impacted the audience of Gemini Studios very effectively for a longtime. Those two hundred people were of all hues and sizes of at least twenty nationalities and the staff of Gemini Studios, had a nice time hosting them. According to the author, the MRA was ac kind of counter-movement to international communism.
In total, the arrival of MRA found successful and effective longlasting in Gemini Studios.
मॉरल रि-अममेन्ट आर्मी लगभग दो सौ मजबूत योग्य कलाकारों का दल था, जिसका नेतृत्व फ्रेंक बकमैन करते थे। यह आर्मी (समूह) मद्रास में 1952 में पहुंचा। जैमिनी स्टूडियोज में वह कुछ नाटकों की प्रस्तुतियों को देने के लिए आई थी जिनको उनके द्वारा सर्वोच्च पेशेवर रूप से तैयार किया गया था। उस दल को जैमिनी स्टूडियोज के द्वारा आमंत्रित किया गया था और बहुत ही गर्मजोशी के साथ स्वागत किया गया था। उन्होंने दो नाटक 'जोवम वैली' तथा 'दा फॉरगॉटन फैक्टर' प्रस्तुत किए थे जिन्होंने जैमिनी स्टूडियोज के श्रोतागणों को बहुत प्रभावशाली ढंग से लम्बे समय तक प्रभावित किया। ये दो सौ लोग सभी आकार-प्रकार के कम से कम बीस राष्ट्रों से थे और जैमिनी स्टूडियोज के स्टाफ (सदस्यों) ने उनका स्वागत करने में बड़ा अच्छा समय बिताया। लेखक के अनुसार, एम० आर० ए० अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय साम्यवाद के विरोधी आंदोलन का एक प्रकार था। कुल मिलाकर, एम० आर० ए० का आगमन जैमिनी स्टूडियोज में सफल व लम्बे समय तक प्रभाव छोड़ने वाला पाया गया।
6. Who was the visitor came to Gemini Studios? How did the audience take his visit? What was his connection with the book The God That Failed'?
जैमिनी स्टूडियोज में आने वाला आगंतुक कौन था ? श्रोताओं ने उसके आगमन को कैसे लिया? उसकी पुस्तक 'दा गाँ चैट फेल्ड' से क्या संबंध था ?
Ans. One day, after a long wait and continuous rumors and imaginations about the expected visitor, finally around four in the afternoon, the poet (or an editor) Stephen Spender arrived at Gemini Studios. After the long speech of the boss, the poet's turn came. He couldn't have addressed a more dazed and silent audience-no one knew what he was talking about and his accent defeated any attempt to understand what he was saying. The whole thing lasted about an hour; then the poet left and whole audience dispersed in utter bafflement. Altogether, his visit remained an unexplained mystery. There was no meaning of such a foreigner in the studio where only Tamil films were made.
The book The God That Failed', which the author Asokamitran found on the footpath once after leaving Gemini Studios, was written by six eminent scholars and Stephen Spender was one out of those six essayists.
एक दिन, अपेक्षित (आने वाले) आगंतुक के लिए लम्बे इंतजार एवं अबाधित अफवाहों और कल्पनाओं के बाद, अंततः दोपहर चार बजे के आस-पास, कवि (अथवा सम्पादक) स्टीफन स्पैन्डर जैमिनी स्टूडियोज पहुँचे। बॉस के लम्बे भाषण के बाद, कवि की बारी आई। वह इससे ज्यादा चकित और शान्त श्रोताओं को संबोधित नहीं कर सकते थे-कोई नहीं जानता था कि वह किस बारे में बातें कर रहे थे और उनकी बात को समझने के लिए किसी भी प्रयास को उनके बोलने की शैली (बोलने के लहजे, प्रवाह) ने परास्त कर दिया तथा उनकी बात किसी को भी समझ नहीं आ रही थी। यह सब लगभग एक घंटे चला, फिर कवि चले गए और सम्पूर्ण श्रोतागण पूर्ण कर्तव्य विमूढ़ता से तितर-बितर हो गए। कुल मिलाकर, उसकी यात्रा एक अवर्णनीय रहस्य रही। स्टूडियो में ऐसे विदेशी (के आने) का कोई अर्थ (मतलब नहीं था जहाँ केवल तमिल फिल्में ही बनाई जाती थीं।
पुस्तक 'द गॉड दैट फेल्ड' जिसको लेखक अशोकमित्रन ने जैमिनी स्टूडियोज छोड़ने के बाद एक बार फुटपाथ (सड़क के किनारे) पाया, यह पुस्तक छः नामचीन विद्वानों के द्वारा लिखी गई थी और स्टीफन स्पैन्डर उन छः में से एक निबन्धकार थे।
